Social Studies 4/27/15

This week students will be finishing their unit on the United Nations and will take a test early next week. This test will be one of their last 4-5 grades of the quarter and is very important. Students will spend an entire day reviewing material but they will also need to study on their own.

Communication Arts: 4/27-5/1

On Monday students will participate in a graded discussion about teen sleep trends and school start times. While waiting to participate in the discussion, students will receive work time to complete their book project. On Tuesday students will write their April One Pager in class. We will have book project presentations the remainder of the week and finish the poetry unit with visual book marking poetry.

Science: Week of 4/27 - 5/1

In science, students will have an introduction to the basics of physics on Tuesday, 4/28.  On Thursday, 4/30, a couple of instructors from the Mackenzie Center will be coming to school to do a geocaching lesson with the 8th graders.  It should be a fun day to get outside and search for geocaches!

Social Studies: Week of 4/20/2015

This week students will be looking at and analyzing issues that the United Nations faces. The most notable issues are: the crisis with Russia vs. Ukraine, the Syria/ISIS, Ebola, and potentially Conflict Diamonds if we are able to.

Science: 4/20 - 4/24

The 8th grade students are finishing up their geology unit this week.  On Monday, 4/20, they will watch Inside Planet Earth which will tie together everything they have learned in the geology unit.  Students will also receive a review packet on Monday, which will be due on Friday, 4/24.  On Wednesday, 4/22, we will take a break from reviewing to participate in Earth Day. Students will learn the history of Earth Day, go outside and help take care of our local environment by picking up litter, and then come back to the classroom for a reflection of the day's activities.  Your student should have received a permission slip for Wednesday in case we leave school grounds (we are planning on walking to a couple of local parks).  If your student did not receive a permission slip on Friday, they will get it today.  Please sign it and have them return it to me ASAP. On Friday, 4/24, we will have our final geology quiz.  The quiz will cover everything on the review packet from Monday.  Please be sure your student is filling out the review packet this week using their geology notes.

Communication Arts: 4/20 - 4/24

We are continuing our poetry unit this week. Students will explore slam poetry, analyze poems both in a group and individually and write different kinds of poetry. On Friday students will begin creating a book presentation to share with the class on a book they have read in March or April which would be due on the following Wednesday, April 29. Just a reminder, the April One Pager writing day will be on Tuesday, April 28, so students have approximately a week and a half to finish reading their April One Pager book.

Science: Week of 4/13 - 4/17

The 8th graders are close to finishing up their geology unit!  On Tuesday, there will be a lesson on the formation of mountains and mountain types.  Thursday will be a lesson on the last of the 3 types of rock - metamorphic rock.  All "homework" this week will be in class. There will be a final geology quiz on Wednesday, April 22nd. Students will receive a review sheet for the quiz on Monday, April 20th.

Communication Arts: 4/13 - 4/17

We will be having 60 minute classes Tuesday through Friday due to Badger testing this week. Student led Reading Minutes start this week as well. Reading Minutes allow students to share a small portion of something they have read with the class. Their classmates then respond in a variety of formats. This allows students to share their interests with the class and practice their public speaking skills. The students will create their own questions to have a graded discussion about an article titled Can Money Buy Happiness? with a small group. We will be starting a poetry unit as well which will include exposure to a variety of poems, figurative language and analyzing lyrics for their poetic devices.

Social Studies 4/7/2015

This week we will be finishing up our introductory work to the United Nations and will also begin our projects/presentations on the United Nations. Students will be doing a short presentation about an issue that is or could be relevant to the United Nations.

Communication Arts: 4/7 - 4/10

This week students will be creating a presentation about their favorite book they've read in 8th grade so far. They will then be sharing this to the class as a means of exposing the students to a variety of books and having an assessment for Reporting Standard 4 (speech). A guest speaker, Mrs. Woodson, will be in class on Thursday talking about bullying. At the end of the week, we will be reviewing how to write at the Advanced and Proficient levels.
