Communication Arts: 6/1 - 6/5

On Monday students will write their May One Pager. Once students are done writing, we will continue Animoto and Social Media Aspect Presentations which will carry over into Tuesday as well. Please double check with your student that they have all aspects to this project complete (Animoto, Facebook profile for a character, mood paragraph and a Twitter or Instagram post). On Wednesday students will be participating in a collaborative discussion and completing grammar activities on noredink.com. At the end of the week, students will be reading and analyzing current events and completing a "Dear Future Me" activity and writing task.

Science: Week of 5/25 - 5/29

This week in science the 8th graders are continuing to learn Newton's 3 Laws and how they apply to the world around us.  On Wednesday, students will be making rockets out of 2-liter bottles and assessing their rocket design based on altitude and performance.  On Friday, we will finish off the rocket and physics unit by watching October Sky.  There will be no homework this week in science.  Enjoy!

Communication Arts: May 26 - 29

Students will have work time in class on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to create their animoto book trailer and complete the writing tasks which accompany this project - social media aspects and paragraph writing task on mood. The students began this project last Thursday and received work time last week as well. Presentations of the animoto projects and social media aspects will begin on Friday.

Science: Week of 5/18 - 5/22

Monday: Mrs. Sukowski will be here to do a guidance lesson with all of the 8th grade students.  She will also be giving the school climate survey at that time.
Wednesday: Students will have an intro to rockets lesson which will include a brief history of rockets.  We will then discuss the rocket unit outline.  Students will be asked to bring in empty 2-liter bottles for a lab we will be doing next week!
Friday: Rocket Car Lab - students will explore how Newton's Third Law relates to the motion of rocket cars and how motion is affected by car design.

Communication Arts: May 18 - 22

In CA students will be analyzing movie trailers of different genres which will end with an independent written analysis using domain specific vocabulary. On Wednesday a guest speaker, Ms. Woodson, will be talking to the students about bullying. Students will then be STAR testing on Friday and beginning a book project to share with their peers.

Science: Week of 5/11 - 5/15

On Tuesday, 5/12, students will be finishing the unit on Newton's Laws of Motion by learning about Newton's Third Law.  There will be a quiz on Newton's Laws on Thursday, 5/14.  Students will receive a quiz review sheet on Tuesday.  They should fill out their review sheet and study it for the quiz on Thursday.

Social Studies: Week of 5/11/15

This week students will be taking their test on the United Nations Unit. Throughout the rest of the week we will get into our unit on Cultures and Religions of the world. This unit will take a look at the things that create differences among people in the United States as well as other place in the world. This unit will also take us through the rest of the year!

Communication Arts: May 11 - 15

This week we will continue our discussion of the Hercules myths, and students will complete the graded writing prompt we didn't get to last week on these myths. Students will participate in a readers theatre production of the myth of King Midas entitled "The Golden Curse". Students will briefly research a Greek God or Goddess of their choice and present their finding to the class. Lastly students will analyze, connect with and summarize a variety of current event articles and have a collaborative discussion with their classmates.

Communication Arts: May 4 - 8

This past week we finished the April book presentations and our poetry unit with visual marking poetry and poetry jeopardy. The students prepared for and participated in a literature circle, and we read two different sources on the same topic - the Hercules myth. The students then completed a writing prompt asking them to summarize the similarities and differences and critique the changes between the original myth and the Disney version paying close attention to audience and purpose.

Social Studies: Week of 5/4/15

This week students will be finishing up their unit on the U.N. and will be doing a fair amount of review work before taking their test on Monday. This has been a long unit for us so it will be very important for students to look back at some of their previous notes as we will not be able to cover everything during our review time together in class.

Science: Week of 5/4 - 5/8

In science this week, the 8th graders will be introduced to Newton's 3 Laws of Motion.  We will start on Monday with an introduction to the three laws and a series of 3 quick labs to help them understand inertia.  On Wednesday we will focus on the second law and acceleration.  On Friday, we will focus on the third law.  Students can expect a short quiz on Newton's 3 Laws on Tuesday, 5/12.
