Reminder - Feild Trip Tomorrow!

The 8th Grade Field Trip to Devil's Lake is this Friday! Please make sure your student has the following things with them on Friday when they leave for school:

• Sturdy Walking Shoes (Students will be walking up 0.5 miles of rock steps. The trail is wet and muddy in some places, gym shoes/hiking shoes are required to get on the bus)
• Dress for the weather! It appears there is the potential for rain in the afternoon, please make sure your student has an extra layer or two in their backpack
• Backpack (to carry water, snacks, extra layers, their phone and the assignment they will need to fill out during the trip)
• A bag lunch (if you did not order one from school)
• A pencil 
• Students will get their assignment and a clipboard at school on Friday

9:07 - 9:15 → Nutrition Break, no bathrooms available again until 11:00

9:15 - 9:30 → Meeting in cafeteria/Group lists/What to expect/Load Buses

9:30 - 10:15 → Travel to Roznos Meadow Trailhead

10:15 - 10:50 → View quartzite bluffs and terminal moraine plug

10:50 - 11:00 → Load buses/travel to South Shore picnic area

11:00 - 11:30 → Lunch (eat in your group)/Bathroom

11:30 - 11:45 → Regroup/Discuss safety/What to do in your packet

11:45 - 1:45 → Hike to North Shore via Grattos Trail → Potholes Trail → East Bluff Trail → North Shore

By 2:00 → Load Buses

2:00 - 2:45 → Return to Poynette

Science 8: Week of April 16

Field Trip Updates: Thanks to all who have turned in permission slips for our trip and to all of the parents who are willing to come along! If your student has not yet turned in a permission slip they are due this Wednesday. Field trip plans are in the works and hopefully we will have great hiking weather! Students will be hiking and discussing the unique geologic history that has lead to the formation of Devil's Lake State Park.

Science 8 - Week of April 9

Permission slips for our field trip are due by April 18. It is our goal to get all permission slips turned in early by this week Friday. If you have not yet seen the salmon colored permission slip, please check in with your student. Thanks to everyone who has turned in the slip already!

This week we are moving on to our weather and climate unit. We'll be starting off by comparing weather and precipitation between different locations - our puzzling question will focus on how the Alaskan villiage that Ms. Pittner spent a year living in actually has warmer winters than here in Wisconsin. Along the way we'll also be thinking about questions like, "Why is my chair sometimes warm when I get to class?" and "Why does a cold drink sweat on a hot day?" The science behind these questions are all central to understanding big weather topics.

Science 8 - Week of April 3

Welcome to 4th Quarter Science! 

In class this week: This week we will be focusing on bringing Earth History concepts back to Wisconsin. Students will be working on individual PowerPoint Presentations in class this week, as well as reviewing for the science portion of the Forward Exam. An outline of this week's project can be found here. Student presentations will take place THIS FRIDAY during class. 

Upcoming Field Trip: As part of the Earth History topics covered in 8th grade science, the Ice Age Trail Alliance along with Ms. Pittner and Ms. Weckerly are planning a field trip to Devil's Lake State Park at the end of the month. Permission slips were sent home with students on Tuesday and are due back by April 18. If you are interested in attending the trip, please note the section for parent volunteers at the bottom of the slip. 

Free Weekend Event at UW: If your student is interested in a STEM career, considering check out the 16th Annual UW Science Expeditions this coming weekend - April 6-8. This event is FREE and open to the public!

• UW Science Expeditions is the annual campus open house that welcomes the public to come visit their public land-grant research unviersity to connect with the people, places and programs in science and science outreach that serve people all year round. It's an opportunity for researchers to share science with people of all ages through hands-on exploration stations, open houses across campus and "Science Spectaculars" shows. More information on this awesome event can be found at science.wisc.edu/science-expeditions.
